LI send greetings to those gathered for the 2007 Valor Gala, hosted by the New York and New Jersey Asian American
Law Enforcement Advisory Committee.
Law enforcement officers are among America's greatest heroes. Every day, these men and women protect our families,
homes, businesses, and communities. These brave public servants put themselves at risk, working tirelessly on the
front lines in the fight against crime, violence, and terrorism. Their selfless service is an inspiration.
I commend these dedicated men and women for their commitment to duty. Your efforts reflect the spirit of America.
Laura and I send our best wishes.
Warm greetings to everyone gathered in Wood Ridge, New Jersey, for the fourth annual Valor Awards gala of the New York and New Jersey Asian American Law Enforcement Advisory Committee.
America owes a lasting debt of gratitude to the men and women of our law enforcement community. Each day, you put your lives at risk to protect us, ensuring the safety of our families and our homes. With courage and commitment, you are battling crime in our nation and building bridges to concerned citizens and troubled neighborhoods.
Your focus on promoting a mutual understanding between Asian American communities and the law enforcement agencies that serve them is particularly important. As both experience and common sense tell us, our neighborhoods are safest when law enforcement and residents are on the same side, working together for the public good. And, as law enforcement officers are first responders at this unique and challenging time in our history, New Yorkers and New Jerseyans can be especially thankful to NY-NJAALEAC for your dedication to excellence.
Congratulations to this year's awardees, and best wishes to all for a wonderful event.
Mr. GARRETT of New Jersey. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the tremendous public service of the New Jersey State Law Enforcement Asian-American Advisory Committee. With Americans of Asian heritage making up an increasingly large proportion of our population, both in New Jersey and across the Nation, it is important that law enforcement have a strong relationship with the Asian-American community.
There are an estimated 14 million U.S. residents with Asian heritage. That's 5 percent of the U.S. population. They are by no means of a monolithic culture with backgrounds from Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, and elsewhere. Asian-Americans have lent this diversity to our national melting pot, enriching America with their contributions to music, food, design, literature, entertainment, and more.
Asian-Americans are our neighbors, our local business owners, our teachers, our elected officials, and also our police officers and first responders. The New Jersey State Law Enforcement Asian-American Advisory Committee helps to bridge the gap both for Asian-Americans in the law enforcement family and in the larger population. Its members engender a greater understanding of the special needs of the Asian-American community.
I am proud to work with them to make New Jersey's neighborhoods safer and bring New Jersey's communities closer, and I am proud to support their efforts to become a national organization.
